IT/OT Convergence
IT/OT convergence is the merging of corporate IT networks with operational technology as OT systems adopt Ethernet, IP and remote access. It brings efficiency and data-driven operations but exposes previously isolated control systems, including rail signaling, to IT-borne threats.
How it works
Historically, OT ran on proprietary serial networks with no connection to the enterprise. Modern systems use standard Ethernet and IP, share infrastructure with IT, and connect to cloud services for analytics, remote maintenance and fleet management. In rail, examples include IP-based interlocking interfaces, onboard diagnostics gateways and centralized traffic management integrated with business systems.
The result is a continuous network path from the internet-facing enterprise to safety-critical controllers, mediated only by whatever segmentation is in place.
Why it matters for security
Most OT security incidents begin on the IT side and traverse into OT through converged infrastructure. Rail operators need to understand exactly where IT and OT meet, control those crossings, and monitor OT traffic for signs that an IT compromise has spread.
